5th Grade

In 5th grade, we will be covering the following topics in each subject area:

Science: Mixture and Solutions, Variables, Landforms and Life Cycles
Social Studies: Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Civil War
Math: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Geometry, Probability and Statistics and pre-Algebra
Literacy: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Biographies, Research, Poetry, Personal Narratives, Fantasy, Persuasive Essays, Grammar
CalWood: In April, fifth graders visit CalWood, a camp located just outside of Jamestown, for three days and two nights. The staff at CalWood leads our students through experiential lessons about life cycles and landforms to follows BVSD science curriculum and standards, and the students love the opportunity to be learning in the outdoors with their friends. We will hold an informational meeting in February.

Math

Students in 5th Grade take a math screener in the Fall to assess student math skills and guide teachers in grouping students for instruction and helping struggling students. A winter and spring screener may also be given to assess growth.

Students in 5th Grade take the Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS) Math test in the spring.

Students in 5th Grade take a middle school math transition test.

English Language Arts

Students in 5th Grade do fall, winter, and spring reading assessments to determine student reading levels and chart progress. The assessments are also used to group students to provide targeted instruction based on student need.

Students in 5th Grade take the Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS) ELA test in the spring.

Health

Under Colorado State Statute and BVSD Board of Education policy IGAE, if parents or guardians want to exclude their child from any portion or portions of health instruction on the grounds that is contrary to the religious beliefs and teachings or closely held personal beliefs of the student, parent or guardian, you may do so by completing the Health Education Program Parental Exclusion Request form IGAE-E. You can also see additional information about the excusal process by viewing the Excusal Procedure regulation IGAE-R.

Learning Materials

Math

Math Expressions has been used in Elementary BVSD classrooms since the 2013 - 2014 school year. It was selected for being a rigorous, well articulated, research based program that aligns closely with the Colorado Academic Standards for Mathematics.

Math Expressions- Models, Methods, and Icons provides for you an overview of expectations, computational techniques as well as some of the instructional methods of Math Expressions.

Language Arts

Dual Language Schools use Pearson Ready Gen, as well as Palabras a Su Paso for Phonics instruction.

Non-Dual Language Schools use Heinemann, Fountas and Pinnell Classroom, as well as Wilson, Fundations for Phonics instruction.
