Literacy
At Foothill Elementary, classroom teachers work with the literacy interventionist to identify students who could benefit from targeted reading intervention. An Orton-Gillinham approach supports reading development in a small-group setting. Orton-Gillinham is evidence-based and designed to teach decoding, encoding, and language comprehension skills in a direct, explicit, multisensory, and sequential way. Phonemic awareness and phonics skills are developed over time to help students progress toward reading proficiency. Interventions will vary in time, group size, and duration based on the specific needs of students. Students who receive literacy intervention will continue to receive universal literacy instruction in their classrooms.
